ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਆਈ ॥
ਇਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
ਇਕਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਗਗਨ ਮਹਿ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
ਸੇ ਕਰਮਹੀਣ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਵਤ ਅਤਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲਿ ॥
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਪੇਲਿ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰਹਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਮਲ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
ਦੀਸੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਉ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
ਮਿਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਦ ॥
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਰੇਦ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡੇ ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੪॥੧੫॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
Some come, and after they come, they go.
Some are imbued with the Lord; they remain absorbed in Him.
Some find no place of rest at all, on the earth or in the sky.
Those who do not meditate on the Name of the Lord are the most unfortunate. ||1||
From the Perfect Guru, the way to salvation is obtained.
This world is a terrifying ocean of poison; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord helps us cross over. ||1||Pause||
Those, whom God unites with Himself,
Cannot be crushed by death.
The beloved Gurmukhs remain immaculately pure,
Like the lotus in the water, which remains untouched. ||2||
Tell me: who should we call good or bad?
Behold the Lord God; the truth is revealed to the Gurmukh.
I speak the Unspoken Speech of the Lord, contemplating the Guru's Teachings.
I join the Sangat, the Guru's Congregation, and I find God's limits. ||3||
The Shaastras, the Vedas, the Simritees and all their many secrets;
Bathing at the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage - all this is found by enshrining the sublime essence of the Lord in the heart.
The Gurmukhs are immaculately pure; no filth sticks to them.
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in the heart, by the greatest pre-ordained destiny. ||4||15||

nullnullnullnullਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਨਿਰੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਫਿਰ ਇਥੋਂ) ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਇਕ (ਸੁਭਾਗੇ ਐਸੇ) ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਅਭਾਗੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਲਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦੀ ॥੧॥nullਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਇਕ ਬਹਤ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਤੇ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਕੇ) ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥nullnullnullਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਢਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਉਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਆਤਮਾ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੌਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥nullnullnullਪਰ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਕੁਝ) ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ (ਇਸ ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਦਾ) ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥nullnullnull(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਣੋ-ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਿਚਾਰਨੇ, ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਲਿਆਂ) ਜੀਵਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦੀ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੫॥
