ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੁਕਾਰਨਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ॥
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਗਾਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਹੋਛੀਆ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਭਗਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਮੋਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਰੁੰਨਿਆ ॥
ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਧਾਰਿ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬੰਧਿਆ ॥
ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੰਧਿਆ ॥੩॥
ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੪॥
ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਤੇ ॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭੁ ਵਾਦਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਭਰਮਤੇ ॥੫॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਜਨੀ ਜਪਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੬॥
ਖੋਜਹਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੰਤ ਕੇ ॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਨੇੜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹੁ ॥
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਾਉ ਏਹੁ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥੧੬॥

Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
The Simritees, the Vedas, the Puraanas and the other holy scriptures proclaim
That without the Naam, everything is false and worthless. ||1||
The infinite treasure of the Naam abides within the minds of the devotees.
Birth and death, attachment and suffering, are erased in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||Pause||
Those who indulge in attachment, conflict and egotism shall surely weep and cry.
Those who are separated from the Naam shall never find any peace. ||2||
Crying out, Mine! Mine!, he is bound in bondage.
Entangled in Maya, he is reincarnated in heaven and hell. ||3||
Searching, searching, searching, I have come to understand the essence of reality.
Without the Naam, there is no peace at all, and the mortal will surely fail. ||4||
Many come and go; they die, and die again, and are reincarnated.
Without understanding, they are totally useless, and they wander in reincarnation. ||5||
They alone join the Saadh Sangat, unto whom the Lord becomes Merciful.
They chant and meditate on the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ||6||
Uncounted millions, so many they are endless, search for Him.
But only that one, who understands his own self, sees God near at hand. ||7||
Never forget me, O Great Giver - please bless me with Your Naam.
To sing Your Glorious Praises day and night - O Nanak, this is my heart-felt desire. ||8||2||5||16||

nullnullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਂਭੇ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਥੋਥੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਪਰਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥nullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥nullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣਦੇ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ, ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਰਥ ਵਿਚ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥nullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਨਿਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥nullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਉਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ। ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ) ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥null(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ (ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥nullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥nullਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ, ਬੇਅੰਤ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਨੇੜਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥nullਹੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼। ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹ ਭੁਲਾਵਾਂ। (ਮੇਰੇ) ਨਾਨਕ (ਦੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ) ਇਹ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ। ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥੧੬॥
