ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਕ ਜੋਬਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਰੂਪਵੰਤੁ ਜੁੋਆਨੀ ॥

Raj Milak Joban Grih Sobha Roopavanth Juoanee ||

Power, property, youth, household, fame and the beauty of youth;

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਸਤੀ ਅਰੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਲਾਲ ਲਾਖ ਬੈ ਆਨੀ ॥

Bahuth Dharab Hasathee Ar Ghorrae Lal Lakh Bai Anee ||

Great wealth, elephants, horses and jewels, purchased with tens of thousands of dollars;

ਆਗੈ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

Agai Dharagehi Kam N Avai Shhodd Chalai Abhimanee ||1||

Hereafter, these shall be of no avail in the Court of the Lord; the proud must depart, leaving them behind. ||1||

ਕਾਹੇ ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

Kahae Eaek Bina Chith Laeeai ||

Why center your consciousness on any other than the Lord?

ਊਠਤ ਬੈਠਤ ਸੋਵਤ ਜਾਗਤ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Oothath Baithath Sovath Jagath Sadha Sadha Har Dhhiaeeai ||1|| Rehao ||

Sitting down, standing up, sleeping and waking, forever and ever, meditate on the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਮਹਾ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਆਖਾੜੇ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਤੇ ਪਵਾੜੇ ॥

Meha Bachithr Sundhar Akharrae Ran Mehi Jithae Pavarrae ||

He may have the most wondrous and beautiful arenas, and be victorious on the field of battle.

ਹਉ ਮਾਰਉ ਹਉ ਬੰਧਉ ਛੋਡਉ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਏਵ ਬਬਾੜੇ ॥

Ho Maro Ho Bandhho Shhoddo Mukh Thae Eaev Babarrae ||

He may proclaim, ""I can kill anyone, I can capture anyone, and I can release anyone.""

ਆਇਆ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਏਕ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ॥੨॥

Aeia Hukam Parabreham Ka Shhodd Chalia Eaek Dhiharrae ||2||

But when the Order comes from the Supreme Lord God, he departs and leaves in a day. ||2||

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

Karam Dhharam Jugath Bahu Karatha Karanaihar N Janai ||

He may perform all sorts of religious rituals and good actions, but he does not know the Creator Lord, the Doer of all.

ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਤੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥

Oupadhaes Karai Ap N Kamavai Thath Sabadh N Pashhanai ||

He teaches, but does not practice what he preaches; he does not realize the essential reality of the Word of the Shabad.

ਨਾਂਗਾ ਆਇਆ ਨਾਂਗੋ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਿਉ ਹਸਤੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਛਾਨੈ ॥੩॥

Nanga Aeia Nango Jasee Jio Hasathee Khak Shhanai ||3||

Naked he came, and naked he shall depart; he is like an elephant, throwing dust on himself. ||3||

ਸੰਤ ਸਜਨ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਮੀਤਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥

Santh Sajan Sunahu Sabh Meetha Jhootha Eaehu Pasara ||

O Saints, and friends, listen to me: all this world is false.

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

Maeree Maeree Kar Kar Ddoobae Khap Khap Mueae Gavara ||

Continually claiming, ""Mine, mine"", the mortals are drowned; the fools waste away and die.

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੮॥

Gur Mil Naanak Nam Dhhiaeia Sach Nam Nisathara ||4||1||38||

Meeting the Guru, O Nanak, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; through the True Name, I am emancipated. ||4||1||38||
